Farmhouse. C18, incorporating elements of a C17 dwelling, with later C19 alterations.
Coursed squared rubble gritstone with ashlar dressings, quoins,stone gable and ridge stacks
and a stone slated roof. Double pile plan. Garden front, symmetrical,2 storeys and attics, 3
windows, with central doorway defined by massive ashlar surround. 4 panel door with upper
4 panels glazed and above,a small margin glazed sash window. Flanking the window are
glazing bar sash windows, 8 over 8 panes, the sashes without horns. Rear elevation with
off-centre doorway set within former C17 window reveal, beneath shallow C20 timber
hood, and with planked and studded door. To the right,a 2-light horizontally-sliding sash
window, each light of 6 panes, set within former C18 doorway with massive ashlar
jambs,bonding blocks and lintel. To the left,tall stair window,3 lights high, with margin
glazing in coloured glass,and set within a flush,unmoulded surround of possibly earlier date.
Further left,a low shallow 4-light mullioned window,the chamfer mullions and splayed reveal
of C17 or earlier date,the lintel a later replacement. Above, a first floor glazing bar sash, 8
over 8 panes, and without horns. Interior; largely undisturbed C18 plan, with central passage
access to rear stair and service rooms,including kitchen with C19 grate and earlier hearth
spit,and vaulted cellar. There are C19 panelled doors,architraves and skirtings, and the dining
room retains a surround of birds eye 'marble' from Ashford-in the Water,a rare decorative
limestone.
