1835 by Pollard of Frome. Ashlar. A 2-storey front of 3 bays with slightly
projecting central bay crowned with square clocktower. The ground floor treatment
rusticated on projecting plinth with 3 arched openings, arches springing from
panelled string. Moulded string at 1st floor level carried over central arch
in pediment shape. Upper floor divided into 3 panels each with 2 wide flanking
panelled pilasters supporting plain frieze, cornice and blocking course with
panelled centre. Clock tower has clock on each face with corner honeysuckle
ornament, and narrow angle Doric pilasters supporting frieze, bracketed cornice
and blocking course with cast iron cresting and weather cock. Ground floor
arches have plain cast iron gates.
The interior is formed of 2 consecutive halls the 2nd being on a slightly
higher level. Painted brick walls with blind segmental arcading. Lean-to
side roofs rising to gabled roof clerestory over concourse supported by cast
iron columns with Y brackets. Clerestory windows of 5 lights in 1st hall, .. ..
6 lights each in 2nd. Brick wall separates 2 halls with semi-circular arched
entrance with the Town's coat of arms over. The 2nd hall has a flat roof.
Eastern end wall has segmental arched exit with 5 light window over.
Nos 29 to 42 (consec) and The Market Hall form a group.
All the listed buildings on the South West Side, South East Side, Market Hall,
Market Cross and the Fountain form a group.
