Monument to Christopher Cass the Elder, Mason (1678-1734). Granite, in form of massive
sarcophagus with segmental lid, entablature and niches to sides. Probably designed by Cass
himself Inscribed: "CHRR CASS/ MASTER MASON/ TO HIS/ MAJ ORDNANCE/
DY'D APR. 21 1734". Cass was a prominent City mason, who was responsible for StJohn's
Smith Square, Blenheim Palace, et cetera. This is said to be the earliest granite monument
in England.
