II
Patio, steps and decorative columns. C16. The patio consists of an area paved with Keinton stone slabs about 4 metres deep, the depth of projection of the end bays, with six plain steps down to forecourt, with end Ham stone balustrades having plinth, turned stone balusters and moulded coping, terminated with square piers capped by Tuscan stone columns about 5 m. tall: four additional columns on bases equally spaced along the steps: their original function not certain, but they are now used to support electric lanterns.
An original feature of the house, much admired by Thomas Corvate (c1577-1617), who considered St. Marks piazza, Venice its inferior.
(Girouard, M and others, Montacute House, National Trust, 1985).
