The north terrace, retaining wall and central steps, to Montacute House

Terrace between house and sunken garden. C16, modified C19. Ham stone ashlar. The retaining wall about 7 metres north of house, and about 80 metres long: very deep plinth on north side, solid low walls with moulded copings, with square piers at intervals on which are set a variety of urn and vase finials, of which the largest flank the central staircase, nine steps down into garden, flanked by solid side walls ending with piers having vase finials: lengths of matching walling at east end of terrace, and also to the north end of the north garden, with obelisk finials.
