House Farm

Range of stables. Circa 1870s. Flemish bond red brick. Pantile roofs
with brick-coped gable ends. Plan: L-shaped on plan. The front (N)
range has arch to central entrance lobby and tack room and flanking
stables. The wing at rear (S) contains a range of stable. Exterior:
1 storey 3-bay north front with elliptical arch at centre with
radiused arris flanked by 2-light casements. Small sash window in end
gables with cambered brick arch. Rear wing has east front with 3 plank
doors and 2 windows with cambered brick arches. Interior: Tack-room
has small brick fireplace and saddle racks; stables in north range
have wooden ventilator roundels in ceilings.
Note: Cross House Farm is one of 3 farms in Earl Spencer's 3,000 acre
North Creake estate. The third Earl Spencer (1782-1845) was founder
and first president of the Royal Agricultural Society, and a fellow
agriculturalist and friend of Thomas Coke, Earl of Leicester of
Holkham nearby.
