of The Stables

GV II

Dovecote within a range of farmbuildings. Late C18. Possibly designed by Henry
Holland. Red brick with hipped slate roof Single storey. To the north a brick, round
headed carriage arch linked to the stables (qv). The west front has a pair of large, off-
centre carriage doors with to the right 2 cross casements with a stable door between, and
beyond a 3-light window. To the left an inserted 2-light window, a blocked window, a
door, a 2-light glazing bar window, a blocked doorway, a 4-light window and another
blocked doorway. Above a square wooden lantern with slate roof and 3 rows of flight
openings on the east and west fronts.
Interior: to the dovecote has 3 rows of free standing fight boxes, 5 tiers high with the
boxes arranged 11,10,11,10, 11 on either side. These flight boxes are made of terracotta,
and they each have a round arched entrance and a flight perch. This building is included
on the list because it is a unique type of dovecote, with the fight boxes arranged in
freestanding rows.
