Winnington
1635-/4/10003 Rose Cottage
II
Estate cottage, circa 1780 for Richard Pennant 1st Baron Penrhyn,
probably built as part of the Winnington Estate improvements, of
which Samuel Wyatt was architect of the Hall. Red-brown English
garden-wall bond brick; gabled Welsh grey slate roof. One storey
and attic, double-fronted. Door of 6 panels fielded on the inner
face with pointed-arched intersecting-tracery fanlight; a
casement to each side of two 4-pane lights beneath the transom
and a pointed arch above it with Y-tracery; a small wing to each
side of main block has a blank pointed-arched opening filled with
a grey slate panel; and corbelled brick verge to a lean-to roof.
Ovolo brick eaves cornice to main block; replaced bargeboards to
each end gable which has a tall 2-flue flush chimney with
projecting bands. Two casements of two 2-pane lights in each
gable, above the wing's lean-to roof. The rear has later lean-
to outshut with no features of special interest and a 4-pane
landing casement. The interior has doors of 6 fielded panels to
the ground floor, a simple dog-leg stair with stick balusters and
moulded rail, all intact. The attic has broad-boarded doors; both
floors have iron HL hinges and blacksmith-made latches.
