Includes: No.5 MEADWAY Hampstead Garden Suburb
Houses. c.1909-10. Unpainted pebbledash with timber framing; dressings in tile flats and brick. Brick plinth in stretcher and mixed bonds. Tiled roofs of varied forms. Two storeys. Canted butterfly plan, in answer to 'Baillie-Scott Corner' (No.22 Hampstead Way, and Nos. 6, 8 and 10 Meadway, q.v.) opposite. Range running across corner of four windows with full-height polygonal bays, roofs hipped. Short wing returning to Meadway; outshut roof with two dormers. Two-window range to Hampstead Way. All windows flat arched with casements of an original design. Entrances set in shallow porches entered through round diaphragm arches on Nos. 28 and 5, and segmental diaphragm arch to No.26. Bays repeated on short returns; angled stacks accentuating picturesque details. Variety of dormers. Lively and changeful elevation which exploits the prominent corner site to the full and must be considered in relation to the long range opposite designed by Baillie Scott, as well as the pair of smaller, butterfly planned buildings, 4 Meadway (q.v.) and 113 Hampstead Way (q.v.). The design of all four blocks was originally given to Baillie-Scott, who executed only one. Nevertheless the units have intrinsic architectural merit and considerable townscape value.
