GV II
Artisans' cottages. 1908-9. Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. Painted pebbledash over plinth of brick in Flemish bond; round-arched entrance to twit ten turned in brick; tile flat gable kneelers and weatherings to all windows but first-floor in recessed range. Roofs of tile. Two storeys. Treated as a gable-facing, double-ended house, with recessed range of six-windows and wings of one window each. Designed to answer to Nos. 5-11 Temple Fortune Hill odd (q.v.) opposite, slight variations in detail and fenestration, many a result of the shallowness of the site. As a consequence, the crosswings project further to the pavement, and the entrances are located only in the main elevation. Bilaterally symmetrical about centre party wall; windows varied in placement and size. Placement of stacks also contrasts with that opposite: pair of small rebated ridge stacks over twit ten passage; one square stack to front and rear slope on interior return of crosswing; ridge stacks to rear of main roof ridge on each crosswing. Form an important part of the original artisans' quarter as planned by Unwin. As with Asmuns Hill, the emphasis is on the production of a coherent streetscape composed of several distinct types.
