Cottage. Probably C17 origins but entirely remodelled in late C19. Rendered stone
rubble and cob. Thatch roof with plain ridge and stone rubble stacks with brick
shafts at each gable end. Concrete tile roof to porch and rear outshut.
Plan: 2 room and central through-passage plan, with parlour to left, former kitchen
to right with staircase to rear right-hand corner of parlour, with access from the
passage and running from back to front. Small late C19 kitchen and scullery outshut
added at rear. The original C17 plan has been obscured by later alterations, the
apparently C17 roof structure being confined over the through-passage and right-hand
room. It is possible therefore that the left-hand room is an entirely new addition
of the late C19, and it is known that a separate cottage originally adjoined the
right-hand end, possibly forming a pair.
2 storeys. 3 window range. C20 fenestration, 2-light casement, 2 panes per light
except ground floor left-hand window which is 3 lights, 3 panes per light. All
window openings have brick quoins and slightly cambered lintels. Leanto porch with
concrete-tiled roof and C20 inner door.
Interior: C19 joinery principally intact. Left-hand room fireplace rebuilt in C20,
that to right-hand room has chamfered timber lintel, probably reused, and blocked
bread oven.
Roof structure: entirely C19 over left end, and superimposed over C17 structure to
right end with 2 trusses, 1 replaced in C20 of flat pitch with trenched purlins.
The timbers and underside of thatch do appear blackened, but this may be due to
natural causes rather than through exposure to an open hearth.
