Formerly known as: Nos.53 AND 53A LOW PETERGATE.
House, now shop. Late C18, possibly with earlier origins and
early C19 alteration; further alteration and extension in C20;
C20 shopfront. Front of painted brick in Flemish bond, rear of
orange-brown brick in random bond; timber moulded modillion
and dentil cornice; pantile roof with brick stack.
EXTERIOR: 3-storey 4-window front. Double shopfront has centre
door between plate glass windows over panelled risers, with
broad fascia and moulded cornice. First and second floor
windows are 12-pane sashes with flat arches of painted gauged
brick, those on first floor with painted stone sill band, on
second floor with sills. Rear: 3 storey gable wall. Ground
floor covered by glazed extension. First floor has shallow bow
window with replacement 15-pane window: second floor, inserted
triple light window beneath wide segmental 2-course brick
arch.
INTERIOR: cantilevered staircase has stone treads, square
section cast-iron balusters and serpentine handrail, wreathed
at foot around turned newel on shaped curtail step.
