II

Farmhouse. C17 and c1840. Red Flemish bond brick with roofs of
Welsh slate and plain tiles.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with cellars and of 2 parallel ranges plus
service wing at rear. Front range of c1840 has gabled slate
roof with fascia returns on ends and 2 projecting flank
chimney stacks. The front has, on 1st floor, 3 small-paned
sash windows with gauged brick arches. The ground floor has 2
similar windows and central doorcase with fluted
segmental-curved simplified Doric pilasters and entablature
with cast-iron applied decoration of laurel wreaths, acanthus
scrolls and central honeysuckle motif. The door has 2 moulded
panels with semicircular heads over 2 flush panels and
overlight with margin glazing bars.
The rear parallel range is of slightly earlier red
Flemish-bond brick with steep gables, plain tiles and angled
brick eaves cornice. On the rear of this is a sash window on
1st floor above a casement with cast-iron opening light with
late C17 fitting, a small area of leaded lights and iron
subsidiary security bars. The rear service range is part
2-storey and part single-storey of red mid-C19 brick with a
slate gabled and slate hipped roof. A large stack rises at the
rear of the C17 range. Between the C17 range and service wing
is a 1st-floor brick-walled room, forming open porch on ground
floor.
INTERIOR: front range has a central entrance hall with
contemporary straight-flight staircase with column newels,
stick balusters and reeded strings. The door between this and
C17 range has coloured glass inserts and margin glazing. The
C17 range has some exposed framing inside including a tie
beam, substantial wall post and chamfered spine beam. In this
part is a double walk-in larder of early C19 with fitted
cupboards, drawers, and shelves. The early C19 character
remains remarkably complete.
