Pair of cottages. c1860. Coursed squared gritstone, slate
roof. Gothic Revival style. One and a half storeys, 3 bays,
the central bay gabled. Long and short ashlar quoins. Facade
to roadway has cross-frame windows in rusticated surrounds, 1
altered. Arched entrances in left and right returns, door to
No.6 probably original with 4 panels; a small stone-roofed bay
window, and 2-light window in gable above. Elaborate eaves and
roof detailing includes deep carved wooden eaves brackets,
fish-scale slates, crested ridge tiles and 2 large 4-flue
corniced eaves stacks, some with tall crenellated chimney
pots.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
One of a group of 4 pairs of cottages built on a narrow strip
field shown on the 1850 Ordnance Survey map; the 1872
Directory shows that William Brown, warehouseman, lived at
No.5 and Thomas Cartwright, gardener, in No.6.
