House. C17 and early C19. Timber-framed and rendered with
roughcast on front elevation and with gabled plain tile roof
to front range with hip up to taller rear wing; north-west
rear extension with hipped slate roof and C20 rear
conservatory extension with some Welsh slate on wide gable.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with cellar; 2-window range. Plain front
parapet. 1st floor has 2 sash windows, each with a single
vertical glazing bar. Ground floor has central doorcase with
flat hood on reeded pilasters to 5-panel door; steps with
wrought-iron handrails. Canted bay window with sash window and
a single sash window, all with central vertical glazing bars,
and a cellar light. The rear extension has a 2-light C20
casement on 1st floor.
INTERIOR: front range has chamfered spine beams, an inglenook
stack with mantel beam and curved interior, and a curved
corner cupboard with doors of early C19. Old door with
bottle-glass bulls' eyes in small panes and scratched
inscription 'Customs House Maldon Essex, Oct 1811 G Gunn'.
Tight winder stairs with continuous curved soffit and brick
barrel-vaulted cellar. Ground floor incorporates part of rear
wing of No.12 (qv) with 2-bay hardwood timber-frame probably
of C17.
