GV II

Memorial. 1839. Commemorates John Hepworth and family. Ashlar.
Rectangular podium, memorial with panelled angled pilasters,
4-centred arched inscribed side panels, cornice with acanthus
leaf decoration and antefixae, swept top surmounted by
funerary urn.
Inscription on E face: 'JOHN HEPWORTH/ OF LEEDS CLOTH DRESSER/
AN ACTIVE & USEFUL MEMBER/ OF THE ANCIENT ORDER OF/ FORESTERS,
WHO FOR 8/ YEARS FULFILLED THE DUTIES/ OF SECRETARY OF THE
ORDER/ WITH TALENTS OF A HIGH ORDER/ COMBINING A SPIRIT OF
UNIVERSAL/ BENEVOLENCE HE DEVOTED/ HIMSELF WITH ENDURING ZEAL
AND/ ENERGY TO THE INTEREST OF THE/ ORDER, WHILE HIS
UNASSUMING AND/ ENGAGING MANNER WON FOR HIM/ THE RESPECT AND
ESTEEM OF ALL/ WHO KNEW HIM. IN PRIVATE LIFE/ HE WAS AN
AFFECTIONATE/ HUSBAND & FATHER/ A SINCERE & CONSTANT FRIEND./
HE DIED SUDDENLY OCT 6TH/ 1839 AGED 31 YEARS/ THIS TABLET IS
ERECTED BY/ MEMBERS OF THE ORDER/ TO RECORD THEIR SENSE OF/
HIS MANY EXCELLENT/ QUALITIES AND TO ETOMILATE (sic)/ OTHERS
TO FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLE'. John's wife, who died in 1889, and
family are also commemorated.
