Memorial. c1862. By J Leach, Becket Street. Commemorates
principally William Alexander, d.1862. Ashlar. Chamfered base,
plinth with recessed panels, moulded base to square-section
column with sculpted portrait head in deep relief on E side,
inscription below. A deep oversailing cornice over the column
formerly supported carved figures of a standing female
carrying a baby and comforting a kneeling girl, flanked by
mournful seated figures.
MEMORIALS: William Alexander died 13 December 1862 aged 58; he
was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, was
elected Grand Master of the district in 1836 and Grand Master
of the Order (membership 400,000) in 1858. Also commemorates
William's son, Anthony, d.1835; daughter Ann, d.1865 and wife,
Elizabeth, d.1887. William was a saddler, born 1804.
