Designed and created by Steve Smith who had been a chorister and Server at St Mark's during the 60's. Trained as a Woodwork Teacher at Shoreditch College of Education in Englefield Green, Surrey. He made the Altar, matching Credence Table and Altar Cross as his final jobs at College. Made in English Oak created using laminations of 4mm thick Oak laminates and square through Mortice and Tenons in 18mm Oak. The Altar top was made using 8 foot long Rub Joints.
Made from September 1968 to May 1969.
The Diocese destroyed the three pieces when the Church became a redundant building and much furniture was being removed. At least they had 2 photographs in their annals which they gave to me as they were the only record of the finished articles in situ.
On qualification Steve taught at a Secondary Modern School in Harrogate for almost 5 years, then taught at Cockburn High in Leeds for over 26 years before becoming an Advisory Teacher for Leeds L.E.A. before retiring.
