GV II*

Gatehouse. c1580. Roughly coursed and squared red sandstone
with plain tiled roof. 2 storeys, with central
segmentally-arched gateway flanked by 2-light mullioned
windows, with coped gable containing 3-light mullioned and
transomed window over. Moulded brick coping to end gables,
with stack to left. Small gabled turret beyond to left, with
timber-framed and brick nogged bellcote behind, with wooden
clock on rear elevation.
The gatehouse is contemporary with the main building of
Whitehall (qv), built by Richard Prince between 1578 and 1582.
