Description

ST 96 NE CALNE WITHOUT DEVIZES ROAD, Sandy Lane
(west side)

5/67 No 3 (Apple Tree Cottage)

GV II

Row of three Bowood estate cottages, now one house, early C19,
rubble stone with thatched half-hipped roof and 2 ridge stacks.
One and a half storeys, picturesque cottage style. Two-light
stone mullion windows with leaded lights, probably replacing iron
casements. Flush quoins. Off-centre door in stone surround and
lean-to stone-slate porch flanked to right by one-window range and
to left by 2-window range, lower windows with hoodmoulds, upper
windows under eyebrows. C20 two-light windows to left and right
replace doors. South end wall has 1-3-1-light canted bay with 2-
light and hoodmould above. A building is marked here on 1763 J.
Powell map, but this appears later in style. The thatched
cottages of Sandy Lane are an outstanding example of an estate
village in the picturesque manner.
