- II
C18, early C19. A high-walled garden laid out on symmetrical lines, but with
the central portion incomplete. The northern boundary is a high red brick wall
(English bond, with stepped plinths) with an early C19 gazebo inserted, so that
it faces an open axis to the whole scheme. The west side of the northern unit
has a central gateway, with ornamental gateposts enclosing wrought iron gates
and low side walls surmounted by rails ending in piers: the eastern side has
a small central gateway, with plain piers at the end of dipping walls. At some
distance the high cross wall to the south has a central opening, the walls
curving down at the angles to simple piers; beyond two walls extend southwards
at equal distances from the axis. An isolated pier survives to the east of the
middle section, crowned by an urn. The gazebo is the chief feature, and has
a fine ashlar facade of 2 oval arches resting on a central Tuscan column and
2 half-columns on each side; above the arches a gable, with a small square
pinnacle at each end, is broken with a dropping curves to a central larger square
pinnacle: the rectangular space has seating on three sides, a panelled ceiling,
and on its exterior (north) side projects beyond the main wall in Flemish bond
brickwork.
