Glenfeadon House

A Grade II Listed Building in Portreath, Cornwall

Glenfeadon House Hotel

Uploader's Comments

Glenfeadon House and its neighbour, now converted into apartments and known as Bassetts Acre, were built by the Bassets of Tehidy in 1828. The Bain family, owners of a large merchant fleet based at Portreath, lived for many years at Glenfeadon -in fact, a member of the family informed Michael Tangye that the Bains built it. It stands on the site of the Portreath Tin Smelting House, founded in 1814. Records indicate that the smelter was busy and profitable, but it closed after only 11 years when its owners went into partnership with a larger firm of smelters. Large lumps of clinker, said to be from the smelter, have been placed on either side of the main steps leading up to the main entrance of the hotel.
