11/10003 Former Quaker Meeting House
- II
Former Quaker Meeting House. Built 1813 at a cost of £600. Coursed and roughly dressed
rubble with granite quoins and dressings; hipped slate roof brick rear lateral stack. Rectangular
plan. One storey. North east elevation of 4-window range with granite lintels over early C19
15/15-pane sashes and central doorway blocked in later C19. To rear (south west) is blocked
window in similar granite surround and segmental brick arch over similar sash. Later C19
addition with hipped roof to right-hand (north west) elevation with central C20 door and
flanking windows; this is partly returned to rear elevation, which has small C20 addition with
rendered walls and hipped slate roof to centre. A good example of a modest Quaker chapel
built in a traditional vernacular style with locally available materials.
