- II
Farmhouse. C18 remodelling or rebuilding of an earlier, circa C17, house. Sandstone
ashlar, the first floor of rear ranges red brick in Flemish bond; east gable end of
front range rendered. Plain tile roofs with gabled ends. Axial, gable end and
lateral stacks with brick shafts.
2-room plan front range with central stair hall; large room in parallel range behind
left end and long wing behind right end. The front range was probably originally a
3-room plan. The room in the parallel back range with a rear lateral stack would
have been the hall-kitchen and the rear wing was a service wing with a back kitchen.
2-storeys. 3-window south front, symmetrical but for a doorway and window above
which are to right of centre. Late C19 or C20 wooden 3-light mullion transom
casements (centre first floor 2-lights), ground floor flat stone arches. Central
doorway with panelled and glazed door and rectangular overlight. Plinth continues
into rear ranges. Similar windows at rear, except for one C18 mullion-transom
casement with leaded panes on first floor of east side of wing and similar on west
side of wing. Doorways into back range and rear wing under pentice in angle, that
into back range has fielded bottom panel and thick glazing bars above.
Interior: Room in parallel back range has 2 chamfered cross-beams with cyma stops.
Axial beams in 2 front rooms, left hand boxed in, right hand chamfered and with cyma
stops, the stops indicating that partition between this room and stair hall has been
moved. C18 staircase with moulded hand rail ramped up to column newel, the
balusters boxed in. Chamfered axial beam in rear wing with run-out stops and
exposed unchamfered joists. Many panelled doors, some fielded panels. Fireplaces
mostly blocked. Fireplace in gable end of rear wing has brick arch, oven and
smoking chamber or drying kiln to right, also with arch. Roof over front range is
said to be similar to that of the large barn at North Woodloes Farm.
