Public house. Circa early C17, remodelled and extended in C18.
Timber-framed refaced and extended in red brick, Flemish bond
at front and English garden wall bond at rear. Plain tile
roofs with gabled ends. Brick axial and gable-end stacks;
large lateral stack to rear wing with diagonally-set shafts.
PLAN: Main range is of 3-room plan, the centre and right
[south] rooms ,now one large room, the right hand room heated
from gable-end fireplace; left [north] room separated by brick
wall; wing to left with lateral stack on side. In the C18
encased in brick, the front wall rebuilt forward and a
parallel range added at the rear; and in the C20 a single
storey extension was built behind that.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. 3-bay front. 12 and 16-pane sashes in
moulded flush frames and with brick cambered arches; C20 porch
on left; brick dentil eaves. At rear gabled wing projecting on
right and parallel range on left with casements and C20
1-storey extension.
INTERIOR: Centre and right hand rooms now one room; right hand
has chamfered cross-beam and deeply chamfered joists with
straight-cut shops, and large fireplace with unchamfered
cambered timber lintel; centre room has deeply chamfered axial
beam with hollow-step stops; left room has unchamfered axial
beam; rear wing has chamfered axial beam with cyma stops and
lateral fireplace with chamfered cambered timber lintel with
cyma stops. In first floor chambers some of frame exposed
including jowled wall-posts and closed central tie-beam truss.
