Lodge with stables, carriagehouse and archway to stable yard of
Eastbrook House (not included in this list), now dwelling and offices.
Circa 1850, converted late C20. Possibly by C E Giles. Chert random rubble,
ham stone dressing, grey limestone quoins and gables, decorative clay tiles,
ridge tiles and bargeboards to dormers, overhanging eaves, pair of brick
stacks set in from gable end right of lodge with additional C20 stack. Plan: L
plan stables with carriagehouse opposite and wall with archway forming courtyard,
lodge abutting with carriageway opening fronting road. Gothic C14 style. One and
a half storeys, lodge 2:1 bays,stables adjoining, set back slightly, 1:3
bays, all ashlar pointed lancet windows with plate glass, buttressed lodge
with 2 irregular sized gables, 2 and single light windows marking carriageway
and pedestrian entrances, openings linked by corbelled out continuous
hoodmould chamfered in 2 orders dying into imposts left, similar chamfered
arch openings, first floor left gabled top to 2-light window, 3-light below;
stable range to right one gabled mullioned and transomed window breaking
through eaves left, 3 gabled dormers in roof space right, ground floor 5
irregularly placed paired lancets with boarded opening end bay right. Two good
original wooden gateways, 3 groin vaults to pedestrian entrance, barrel vault to
carriageway. To right, wall with buttressed arched opening chamfered in 2
orders, gable splayed out. Courtyard building extensively altered late
C20 but not visible from road. Occupies a prominent position on the road and forms
a good group with the coeval buildings No 57 and 59 (qv) opposite.
