First World War memorial, unveiled in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands in the south-west corner of the churchyard of the Church of All Saints (Grade I-listed). Carved from Hamstone, it consists of a medieval-style lantern cross with a canopied top ornately decorated with carvings in relief, including the Crucifixion and the dove of peace, and surmounted by crocketed finials. The lantern is set on a cruciform column with a moulded capital and crocketed carving to its upper part. It rises from a chamfered, square plinth which stands on a three-stepped, square base.

An inset panel on the west face of the plinth carries the principal dedicatory inscription which reads: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY/ OF THE MEN/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO DIED/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR. The panels to the north and south faces are carved with the names of the Fallen. The five men who fell in the Second World War are listed on a bronze plaque to the east face.

History

The war memorial in Trull was unveiled and dedicated on 19 September 1920, as part of the great wave of commemoration of the sacrifice made by the fallen from communities across the country. It is prominently located within the churchyard of All Saints’ Church and commemorates the 14 men from the parish who lost their lives during the First World War. Following the Second World War an inscription was added in memory of those who fell in that conflict.

Reasons for Listing

Trull War Memorial of 1920 is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Architectural interest: a well-executed and elegant memorial in the medieval style;
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Group value: with the Grade I listed Church of All Saints, and a chest tomb and the village stocks, which are both listed at Grade II.
