Description

SEMINGTON DEVIZES ROAD
ST 96 SW
(off north side)
5/189 Barn approximately 75m north-west of
Littleton Wood Farm
GV II

Chapel, now barn. Probably late C16, altered. Rubble stone,
Bridgwater tiled roof. Single-storey, east gable end has wide
recessed chamfered doorway with hoodmould, three fragments of an
egg and dart moulded cornice set across gable, probably reset,
cyma-moulded plinth continues to left return. Blocked opening on
left return and remains of another opening on right return. West
gable end blocked window.
Interior contains a shell-headed niche, possibly c1600 and
fragments of heavily-moulded cornice or architrave, also-the right
hand jamb of a stone Tudor-arched fireplace. Heavy spine beam and
joists unchamfered. C19 two-bay roof with raking struts between
tie-beam and principals. A curious building; some or all of the
interior features have been reset, though it is not known whether
they come from another structure or from different positions within
this one. The blocked openings and later roof suggest a
remodelling and possible change of use. No record exists of this
ever being a chapel.
