This monochrome image of Watford Town Hall was often used in promoting the town in post-war years. The building was completed in 1939 and officially opened in the following January. This view was taken from a vantage point at the northern end of the High Street and is looking due west at the concave face of the distinctive building, across the slightly earlier roundabout (1936), at the junction of Rickmansworth Road (off to the left), Hempstead and St. Albans roads. Already by the mid-1930s, this area was a notorious spot for traffic congestion. Older residents in Watford complained at the demolition of "The Elms" in 1937 to make way for this new development, but this contributor has no such complaints, attending both meetings and prize-winning Speech Days 1957-61 in the Town Hall, as a pupil, steward and prefect at nearby Watford Boys' Grammar School!
