9/78 Mill House

GV II
House. Late C15 with alterations of early C17, early C19 and 1984. A 2-cell
open-hall house. 2 storeys. Timber-framed and plastered. Plaintiled roofs
with rear and side chimneys of red brick. C19 casements and sashes, some with
small panes; a canted 1-storey bay shop window to left. Early C19 entrance
doorway with 6-panelled door, architrave and simple pediment on brackets. A
rare example for rural Suffolk of a single-bay open hall with a cross-passage
within the service end (to left). A spere-beam spans the hall to support the
upper floor over the cross-passage; it was supported on arch-braces later
removed. Collar purlin roof with smoke-blackening, now enclosed by the C19
roof built over it. Evidence for twin arched doorways into the service rooms.
An upper floor and rear chimney were added in C17, together with a 2-storey
wing behind.
