MORCHARD BISHOP WEEKE
SS 70 NE
5/192
- Middle Weeke Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. C16 core, C17 improvements, renovated circa 1973. Plastered cob on
rubble footings; rubble stacks topped with C20 brick; concrete interlocking tile
roof (formerly thatch). Altered 3-room-and-through-passage plan house facing south-
east with service room at left (south-west) end. End stacks, the inner room stack
disused, and axial hall stack backing onto former passage. C20 single storey rear
outshots. 2 storeys. Irregular 4-window front of late C19 and C20 replacement
large pane with margin pane sashes. C20 gable-roofed of concrete pantile porch left
of centre is flanked by tripartite sashes. Gable-ended roof.
Interior modernised circa 1973 but much of original fabric probably survives behind
C19 and C20 plaster. Fireplaces are blocked, service room ceiling level raised with
new crossbeam and hall-inner room partition removed circa 1973. Mid C17 crossbeam
in hall has elaborate moulding with unusually fine variants of scroll stops
featuring inscribed floral motifs. Roof is inaccessible and lower parts of the
trusses are boxed in. The impression is of a C17 or later roof but torchlight
through a small hole in the first floor ceiling shows some smoke-blackened timbers.
