Town Wall and Sandwell Gate

A Grade I Listed Building in Headland, Hartlepool

Sandwell Gate

Uploader's Comments

Sandwell Gate is the only remaining stone gateway of the town walls of Hartlepool, founded in the reign of King Edward II. The remaining portion of the early 14th century town wall, serves as a sea wall to the southern flank of The Headland. A great deal of the northern part of the wall has been rebuilt, with most of its original features being lost. Near its south-east end is the late 14th century Sandwell Gate, a plain pointed arched gateway, with battered buttresses to the seaward side. The buttresses continue above the string course of the wall and up to full height of parapet and wall-walk. Within the arch, is a segmental barrel vault with chamfered ribs and to the landward side is a shallow triangular arch.
