House. Mid C18 core, enlarged and remodelled c1830. Red brick in English
garden wall bond, graduated slate roof. Central direct entry double-range
plan with rear wing and outshuts: lower wings to right and left of front
elevation. 2 storeys, 3 bays. Symmetrical elevation. 6-panel door under
fanlight with radial glazing in doorcase with dentilled open pediment on
fluted consoles. 4-pane sashes with sills under cambered wedge lintels to
right and left. First floor: 3 similar, smaller 4-pane sashes. End stacks
to main range, axial stack to rear wing. Tumbled-in brick to raised gables.
Lower wings have 6-panel door under rectangular opening to left, blocked
opening to right. Coped parapets. This building possesses a fine unaltered
interior of c1830 including a cut-string stair with scrolled tread-ends,
fluted balusters, and slender handrail, marble fireplaces with pilasters and
scrolled brackets to mantel shelves, doors of 6 beaded panels with panelled
reveals and soffits in fluted architraves, and alcoves with fluted
architraves to match. Many of these details can be paralleled in Lane House
and Barff House in the same parish (qv).
