GV II
Detached cottage. Circa 1600. Local lias stone roughly cut and squared; thatch roof with plain gables; brick end
chimney stacks. Two storeys, 3 bays. Three light horizontal bar casement windows, the lower under timber lintols: to
lower bay 2 an early C20 part-glazed door under timber lintol, without hood. Small matching projection to rear.
Interior not seen, but reported are fireplaces in both gable ends, with remains of oven at one end and bacon curing
chamber at other, with additional contemporary fireplace at first floor level; various chamfered beams with stop and
runouts; spiral staircase and a plank and muntin partition survive, as does timber framework of a flue. There is a
tradition that this is the resting house for the duty monk from Muchelney Abbey who would have come over to take
services in the Church of St Barnabas (qv), in which case the core could be pre-l530. (VAG Report unpublished SRO,
undated).
