4 pairs of semi-detached council houses. Dated 1922 by George J Skipper.
Clay lump with pargetted render in herringbone pattern. Pantile roof with
plain bargeboards to gable ends and overhanging eaves. Central axial stack
with small brick shaft on ridge.
Plan: 4 pairs of cottages arranged in crescent formation. Each pair has
mirror-image plan with principal front rooms at the centre, a doorway to the
left and right and short wings to the back with small single storey wings
beyond.
Exterior: Single storey and attic. Symmetrical fronts, each pair with a
small central gable with 2-light casements with timber drip shelf and a laurel
wreath in the apex (Nos 3 and 4 with initials T.R.DC for Thetford Rural
District Council and Nos 5 and 6 with date 1922). Two and 3-light casements
below flanked by half-glazed doors and simple flat-roofed wooden porches. Nos
3, 7 and 8 have larger later C20 gabled porches and Nos 1 to 6 have
replacement casements with top-opening lights. Under the eaves above each
doorway a very small square window. At the rear short gabled wings to right
and left with single storey gabled-ended wings below and gable at the centre.
Interiors not inspected.
Fairfields was designed by Skipper for the Thetford Rural District Council as
part of an experiment in cheap house building techniques q.v. The Crescent,
East Harling, Norfolk.
