CUBERT PENHALE
SW 75 NE
2/10001 The Count House

Count house, now accommodation for army training camp. Early
C19. Slatestone rubble with dry slate roof and brick end
stacks. Double-depth plan. 2 storeys; 3-window range.
Segmental brick arches over central door and horned 6/6-pane
sashes; canted oriel to right with sashes. Similar sashes to
rear. Interior not inspected.
An unusually complete surviving example of its type, from
which was controlled and scrutinised the apportionment of
underground leases (or pitches) in the mines. The first floor
of the count house was used for meetings, and from the oriel
(which is a very rare survival) was conducted the auctioning
of pitches during the setting day. Detailed records exist of
its activities between 1849 and 1870 when lead, silver and
haematite were mined in four shafts at Penhale Mine.
Associated mines were Wheal Golden, Phoenix and Gravel Hill.
