Gateway and railings. c1900. Ashlar and wrought-iron. A pair
of tall square ashlar gate piers with moulded bases, panelled
sides, and deep entablature with shaped cap surmounted by a
ball. Between them, a pair of ornate wrought-iron gates. On
each side, single pedestrian gates of similar design flanked
by shorter square gate piers similar to the main piers. To the
right, a short stretch of railing over an ashlar base wall,
ending in a square pier with moulded base and cap. To the
left, railings over an ashlar base wall stretch along Thompson
Road and up the hill to the edge of the Botanical Gardens.
These railings are divided into panels by taller square iron
piers with pyramidal caps and ornate supports. At the end, a
square ashlar pier with moulded base and cap surmounted by a
ball.
