Etruria House Hotel

House, now hotel. 1876, with late C20 alterations. Built for
John Armitage, manufacturer of decorative fireclay products.
Yellow brick, with lavish moulded fireclay ornament and hipped
slate roof with coped brick ridge and side wall stacks.
Plinth, dentilled ground floor cornice and first floor
sillband, string course, modillion eaves with floral panels. 2
storeys; 5 window range. 5 segment-headed plain sashes with
ornamented surrounds, the third and fourth windows arranged as
a pair above a bay window. Below, 2 canted brick bay windows
with dentilled cornices and panelled coped parapets, with 3
round-arched plain sashes divided by twisted Corinthian
columns and flanked by pilasters. Between the windows, a
fireclay doorcase with panelled Corinthian pilasters,
ornamented segmental head and cornice, partly blocked and
containing a late C20 casement. To right of the bay windows,
an identical doorcase with C20 door and overlight. Beyond, a
set back service wing with side wall stack, 2 storeys; single
window range. Double plain sash with central shaft, and below,
C20 door and sidelights.
INTERIOR: entrance hall has enriched segmental arch on double
columns and wooden staircase with turned balusters. Central
room has pierced cornice and panelled ceiling with boss.
The nearby steps (qv) lodge and gate piers, (qv) and
Armitage's works at Devonshire Street (qv) are also lavishly
ornamented with his products.
