Description

BURNLEY

SD8432SE TODMORDEN ROAD, Burnley Wood
906-1/21/180 Hand Bridge
29/09/77

GV II

Public road bridge over River Calder. Perhaps built when
Todmorden Road was turnpiked in 1817, but appears to be dated
1866 on east side; widened on west side in C20. The east side
has a very low semi-elliptical arch with rusticated run-out
voussoirs decorated with a free and inventive form of
vermiculation which includes primitive foliation, faces, and
the date "1866" low on the left; a plain band, parapet with
rounded coping, a rectangular terminal pier to the south, and
a 7m continuation south of this incorporating a stone baffle
gateway (damaged).
