Board school. 1906. By Holmes & Watson. For the Sheffield
Education Committee. Coursed squared stone with ashlar
dressings and gabled and hipped slate roofs with various
stacks. Arts and Crafts style.
EXTERIOR: plinth and shouldered coped gables. Windows are
mainly transomed glazing bar casements.
Central hall, flanked on all sides by single storey ranges,
has a central octagonal wooden bell turret with shallow lead
dome and finial, and at each corner, an octagonal stone turret
topped with an octagonal louvred ventilator with shallow lead
roof and finial. East gable, to Bannerdale Road, has stone
mullioned 4-light cross casement and above, a shouldered
gabled single bell turret with volutes and finial. On either
side, 2 segment-arched leaded dormers with transomed glazing
bar windows.
East front has central gabled through-eaves dormer flanked by
single windows. Beyond, single gables with shouldered
segmental pediments and 3-light windows with label moulds.
Basement has 6 segment-headed 3-light windows with buttresses
between them. Beyond again, in each return angle, a set back
hipped block with 4 small windows. Left block has 2-light
casement and door.
North front, to Carter Knowle Road, has central gable with
segmental pediment and 3-light window. On either side, a
through-eaves dormer with swept coped gable, flanked by single
light windows. Beyond, to left, a small wing with
segment-headed gable and 2-light mullioned window. To right, a
larger wing topped with a pedestal with gabled pediment, with
a 3-light mullioned window. Below and to left, a shallow
square bay window with lead roof and 2-light cross casement.
Rear elevation, to Fossdale Road, is of similar design.
INTERIOR not inspected.
E Holmes, in partnership with AF Watson 1893-1906, designed
several schools for the Sheffield School Board, of which this
is a complete example.
