Description

SHEFFIELD

SK39SE BRIGHTSIDE LANE
784-1/2/97 (South East side)
17/07/87 Roadside wall facing main range of
Vickers Building, River Don Works

GV II

Wall of steelworks. Early C20 with late C20 works on far side.
Built for Vickers, Son & Co. Brick, in English Garden Wall
bond, with stone dressings. Tall single storey range, 8 bays,
and to right a lower single storey range, 4 bays, which was
originally longer. Plinth, pilasters and parapet, defining
full-height recesses with rebated and cogged heads. The 8 bay
range has a tall round-arched opening in each bay, all but the
heads bricked up. The 4 bay range has tall multipane windows
with segmental heads. Together with the Vickers Building
opposite (qv), this wall illustrates a "canyon" development,
where tall steelworks lined the streets. This was a
characteristic form of development in Sheffield.
Included for group value.
