Lodges, railings and gate piers at
Burngreave Cemetery

2 lodges, railings and gate piers. 1860-61. By Flockton & Lee.
Coursed squared stone and ashlar, with ashlar dressings and
slate roofs. Cast-iron railings. Jacobean Revival style.
EXTERIOR: larger lodge, to left, formerly the superintendent's
house, has plinth, quoins, string course and coped gables. 2
gable stacks, one external, plus single lateral and ridge
stacks. 2 storeys; 3 window range. L-plan. Central square
tower porch with single chamfered window and above, a
traceried wooden bell stage and steep pitched pyramidal roof.
Diagonal buttress, and moulded pointed doorways to front and
to right. Flush gable to left has a 2-light stone mullioned
window and below, a canted bay window with plain sashes. Set
back wing to right has a through eaves gabled dormer with a
2-light mullioned window and below, a 2-light mullioned
window. Left return has a similar dormer and below, a 3-light
mullioned window.
Smaller lodge, to right, formerly the sexton's house, in a
simpler version of the same style. 2 storeys; 2 window range.
L-plan. Single external gable and single ridge stacks. Large
left gable has a 2-light mullioned window on each floor and to
right, a shouldered doorway with close boarded door. Right
return has a single chamfered window on each side of the
stack.
INTERIOR not inspected.
Between the lodges, 4 gate piers with gabled tops and
pyramidal caps with crocket finials. 3 pairs of cast-iron
gates. Beyond, on either side, a cast-iron railing on a
chamfered stone plinth. Gates and railings have Decorated
tracery. Beyond the railings, on either side, short boundary
walls linked to the lodges. The left one has chamfered plinth
and coping, the right one a gabled rubble coping.
Lodges unoccupied and boarded up at time of survey.
