(Formerly Listed as:
RISBYGATE STREET
(North side)
No.100)
GV II
A house and 2 cottages, later a house and workshop in one
occupation; now empty. Early C19 with a C17 core. Part painted
brick; part render over a timber frame; slate roofs.
EXTERIOR: Nos 98A and 99 are 2-storey; No.100, 3-storey. An
internal chimney-stack between Nos 98A and 99, which have
roofs on slightly different levels. No.98A has a half-glazed
door to the upper storey and No.99 has 2 sash windows without
glazing bars in shallow reveals. No.100 has a painted brick
front and rendered sides; a bulge in the render on the east
gable above 1st floor level indicates that the top storey is a
later addition.
The roof has a wide overhang and a paired modillion eaves
cornice. 3 window range: the 1st storey with a central 12-pane
sash in shallow reveals flanked by 2 segmental tripartite bays
with 12-pane central sashes and diminished side lights. These
bays are flat-roofed and may originally have extended to
ground storey level. The present ground storey of all 3
sections is taken up by workshops. At the rear of No.100 a
wing linked to the front by a large offset red brick
chimney-stack.
INTERIOR: the ground storey is denuded of any historic
features. On the 1st storey front of No.100 ovolo- moulded
cross-beams to the ceiling, set slightly skew. The main post
at the front has been removed. Shutters with sunk panels to
the windows. In the eastern half of the rear a 2-bay room on
the 1st storey with an ovolo-moulded main beam and good, but
widely spaced, joists. An early C19 stair to the added top
storey of the front has stick balusters, a ramped handrail and
moulded newels. Roofs in this part are hidden, apart from one
small late section.
At the rear of Nos 98A and 99 a wing at right-angles to the
front contains 2 bays of late C17 timber-framing.
Widely-spaced studs exposed on upper storey and a large main
beam, possibly re-used, although it fits well. Roof much
replaced, but with the remains of clasped purlins; rafters
with ridge and saddles.
