House, later divided into 2, with a shop. Early C18 with a
fragmentary earlier core; C18 front and alterations.
Timber-framed; faced in panelled plaster painted in squares;
framing exposed on the upper part of the north gable wall,
which has a red brick wall built against it. C20 plaintiles.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics; 2 gabled rear wings. 4 12-pane
sash windows in flush cased frames to the 1st storey. The
ground storey has 2 sash windows without glazing bars and one
small shop window. 2 gabled dormers have 2-light single bar
casement windows. 3 doors, all altered, partly panelled. C18
gable-end framing with widely-spaced thin studs and primary
braces. A plaque set into the brick wall reads: 'This entrance
to the CATTLE MARKET Made by Order of the Town Council August
1852. J.P.EVERARD Esq, Mayor'.
INTERIOR: the front range is in 6 bays with an internal
chimney-stack. Main beams only are exposed in the 3 bays to
the north of the stack; to the south of the stack, a large
chamfered transverse beam with run-off stops has widely spaced
joists set on edge. On the 1st storey one truss has long
arched braces.
Along the rear wall a short length of wallplate has housings
for rafter feet below an added section of wall framing. The
front attic storey and the gabled rear range are all C18
additions with thin bisected studs and long straight primary
braces. The upper ceilings still have joists set flat. Rafter
roofs, ceiled off at collar level. Much of the framing inside
the house has been recently exposed.
