Building society offices, now Local Education Authority
offices. 1927. By G & S Keighley. For the Borough Building
Society; altered. Sandstone ashlar, the upper floors
punch-dressed (rear of Accrington brick and white glazed
brick), roof not visible but probably slate. One-and-a-half
depth (front offices with rear corridor and staircase).
3 storeys, 1:2:1 windows (the left portion infilling). The
2-window principal element has a moulded plinth, sillbands to
the upper floors, a modillioned cornice and a parapet with
pedimental cresting; 2 pairs of coupled sashed windows on each
floor, those at ground floor segmental-headed and with
polished granite colonnettes and a continuous cornice, and
those on the upper floors square-headed with roll-moulded
surrounds. To the right and slightly set-back is a narrow
single-window bay which has (inter alia) a segmental-headed
doorway at ground floor; to the left the infilled portion (of
coursed squared sandstone) has irregular fenestration window.
INTERIOR: some original panelling; staircase with geometrical
balusters; some stained glass.
Forms group with Nos 18 & 20 adjoining to the right (qv) and
with No.9 Grimshaw Street adjoining to the left (qv). Included
for group value.
