Back Lane Farmhouse

GV II

Farmhouse with attached barn and shippon, now house and garage
or store. Barn and shippon probably C18, house early to mid
C19; both altered. Barn and shippon of random rubble with
quoins, corrugated sheet roof; house of coursed squared
sandstone (rear rendered) with stone slate roof.
PLAN: linear plan parallel to road: 3-bay barn with lean-to
shippon to the right and single-depth double-fronted house to
the left, and small wing to left of this.
EXTERIOR: the house: 2 storeys and 1:3 windows, with a moulded
gutter cornice, has a doorway with plain surround finished
with a primitive segmental pediment, a narrow window above the
doorway, 2-light windows on each floor to the left and
single-light windows to the right, all vertical rectangular
with raised sills and plain surrounds, and all furnished with
C20 small-paned top-hung casements; and a short set-back side
wing in similar style. Corniced chimneys at left gable and on
ridge.
The barn to the right has a segmental-arched wagon doorway in
the centre and a blocked doorway to the right; and the
attached shippon has a window and a doorway to the front.
INTERIOR not inspected.
Forms group with Cherryfold on opposite side of road (qv).
