Bank, now offices. 1894. By William Waddington, for the Union
Bank; recently altered and restored. Sandstone ashlar, slate
roof. Jacobean style. Rectangular plan on corner site, with a
splayed corner to Grimshaw Street.
3 storeys plus basement and attic, 3 windows plus a 2-window
corner; with sillbands, a strapwork frieze and dentilled
cornice to the ground floor, panelled friezes to the upper
floors, a cornice over the 2nd floor, and an attic storey with
enriched semicircular gablets over the windows, with ball
finials, and a more elaborate feature over the corner. The
corner has a round-headed doorway with panelled pilasters and
carved extrados with monogrammed keystone ("UB"), coupled
windows at 1st floor with a colonnetted Jacobean-style
architrave including carved triangular cresting and ball
finials, a tripartite window at 2nd floor, and a pilastered
shaped gable with a central window. The 3-window facade to
Manchester Road has recessed windows at ground and 1st floor
set behind colonnades, that at ground floor with arched
openings. The Grimshaw Street facade, of 3:2:3 windows,
repeats this design twice, separated by 2 windows in matching
style. C20 glazing in all windows.
