BURNLEY

SD8332NE HAMMERTON STREET
906-1/15/63 (West side)
29/09/77 Nos.9-29 (odd) Former Burnley
Cooperative Society premises

GV II

Former Burnley Co-operative Society premises; now in multiple
occupation by various shops, and the upper floors in process
of conversion at time of survey (1991). Dated 1885, 1889 and
1899 at parapet level (in north to south order), the 1st two
by GB Rawcliffe of Burnley and the last by Thomas Bell, also
of Burnley. Probably steel-framed, with cladding of sandstone
ashlar and hipped slate roofs. Renaissance style. Irregular
plan in 3 portions but presenting a long continuous facade.
EXTERIOR: 3 tall storeys over a basement (which is exposed at
the rear), 3+5+3 wide bays. All 3 portions have banded
pilasters and a cornice at ground floor, a panelled band
between the 1st and 2nd floors, a plain frieze, and parapets
with central pediments, but the details differ from block to
block. The earliest, at the north end, has a wide 3-window
central bay with arcaded round-headed windows at 1st floor and
segmental-headed windows at 2nd floor; narrower outer bays
with large transomed 6-light windows; and a parapet with a
pedimented plaque in the centre and inscriptions:
1885/ BURNLEY/ CENTRAL/ CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY/ STORES
The larger central block has a 3-window centre; a doorway at
ground floor of the 1st bay in Venetian window form with Ionic
colonnettes; coupled round-headed windows on both upper floors
with set-in colonnettes of polished pink granite (Tuscan at
1st floor, Corinthian at 2nd floor); a frieze between the
upper floors inscribed "CENTRAL / 1889 / STORES"; and a
balustraded parapet with a pedimented central feature
containing a carved beehive and lettering "SWEETS OF
INDUSTRY". The south block is similar to the north block, but
has a balustraded parapet with a central pediment and raised
lettering:
1899/ BURNLEY/ CENTRAL / CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY / STORES
The right-hand return wall has various very large transomed
windows; the rear has (inter alia) tall cross-windows at
ground floor, tall mullioned windows above, and a tall square
chimney stack.
INTERIOR: staircase lined with decorative glazed tiles; former
meeting hall and boardroom at 1st floor.
Forms group with No.10 (qv) and Nos 12 & 14 (qv) opposite,
collectively representing the growth of the Burnley

Co-operative Society from 1862-1905.
