Ballindune and Ballindune Cottage

II

1902 by E.J. May. Shallow V-shaped house with separate building in front [Ballindune Cottage] linked by roof of porte-cochere. Two storeys at sides, two storeys and attic in projecting gabled centrepiece with oversailing attic. At right a one-storey wing. Decorative features formed by colours and textures of materials. Soft brown brick with dressings of brighter red brick. Fairly high-pitched tiled roofs with swept eaves over deep soffits. Oak-framed leaded casements. Much decorative oak framing including arch braced posts and beams of carriage entrance. This theme, very reminiscent of Lutyens continues inside where well-detailed oak beams rest sometimes on store corbels. Patches of herringbone brickwork and, behind, much fanciful use of varied brick and tile work; and the tall diagonal chimney shafts are linked by tiled panels. Gabled buttresses to one-storey wing. Ballindune Cottage has an open timbered porch with carved date and initial: R.
