Substantial house of circa 1600 with C19 additions. Old house: Two storeys and
attic, 3 main bays with a passage bay between 2nd and 3rd bays. Straight square
framing of fairly thick scantling exposed on ground floor, with painted brick filling.
Tile hung above. High pitched tiled roof, moulded wood eaves cornice. Two old
chimneys behind. C19 leaded casements. Interior shows a side-purlin roof with
wind braces, very heavy timbers and later added struts and collars. Considerable
late C19 extensions by J.W. Penfold including much ornamental glass with patterns
of foliage and delicately painted birds. Good fireplaces and woodwork also in
this part.
